A couple of business meetings in town has given me a some bonus time with Tim. He's had two good days. I arrived Wednesday evening after swapping cars with Amy and drove straight to Spaulding. Tim was pumped to show me how far he can now lift himself out of the chair using his left leg and his arms on the wall rail. He's definitely getting stronger. He also showed me the latest art work from fine motor skills group - painted pumpkins. Except for one. Tim carved his, allowing him to continue the tradition he has shared with him mom and sister for years (I don't go there).
I started my day with a civilized walk across the Common and then spent the rest of it ensconced in a conference room. Bummer. Afterwards I walked through the mist down to Spaulding and spent a couple of hours with the lad. It was another good day for Tim. With a little help from Kevin and Maggie, he stood with a wheeled walker and was able to go about 15 feet (again, with a little help with the right leg). A little time in wheelchair group, and sessions with the Bioness and Fluidotherapy unit rounded out the day. He feels that the latter two have really improved his right hand and he can almost close it easily.
We spent some time going through some stuff I brought from home, including his disabled placard for times when he needs to take advantage of handicapped parking spots. I brought what I thought was an interesting article from The Paper, about external combustion engines. Of course, Tim knew all about them, and their stage of development. He was happy to share his opinion of them with me.
We wrapped the day up with a shave. Only this time, Tim handled it himself. It was a bit of a struggle, but he did a nice job. I believe he is going to stay clean shaven now, using his electric razor that I brought from home.
Earlier today, Tim's old roommate Brendan stopped by to say hello while he was in the building for some outpatient therapy. We appreciate that, as does Tim. He also got some mail from Aunt Merrilyn and Pastor Shawn from West Stockbridge Congregational, UCC.
Tim has a big night ahead of him tomorrow, so it's early to bed. For both of us.
